A Worked Example of a Full Kout Hand, Step by Step

Kout Score Blog

This is a worked example of one full Kout hand, from picking up your cards to writing down the score. The hand is hypothetical, and every detail follows your group's house rules.

Step One: Read Your Hand First

Before صن or حكم enters your head, sort your cards by suit and see where the weight sits. In our imaginary hand you hold one suit with two aces, a king and two middling cards, plus a second suit of small cards only. That shape hints at where you are comfortable.

Do not count only the big cards. The small ones decide whether you can pass the lead to your partner or must burn something valuable early.

Step Two: صن or حكم — The Real Trade-Off

صن commits the table to a suit from the start, which suits a hand concentrated in one suit where you control the rhythm. حكم brings a trump suit into play, which supports a hand with scattered cards or one strong trump that rescues awkward tricks.

The trade is simple: صن buys clarity and costs you more risk, while حكم buys flexibility at lower risk. A strong single suit points toward صن, a scattered hand toward حكم — and either way, the call follows your group's rules.

Step Three: Your Partner Reads Cards, Not Talk

You cannot discuss the hand across the table. Your first lead is the message: the suit you open shows where your strength sits, and a high card says you hold that suit.

Step Four: The First Trick and Leading High

The opening trick sets who owns the hand. If you hold the ace of the suit the opponents opened, play it and take the trick. If the suit is not yours, drop a small card and save the big one.

Leading high early works when you want to establish control and send a clear signal. It backfires when it drains your strength before mid-hand.

Step Five: Mid-Game Decisions

The middle of the hand is where small choices add up, and every trick removes an option. Count what has gone in the main suit and what is left in both hands.

If you are ahead, let the hand come to you and avoid unnecessary risk. If you are behind, take a calculated chance on a high card, within your group's rules.

Step Six: Closing a Full Kout Hand and Recording Points

The closing tricks decide the result. Do not rush your card; think about what your partner still holds. Plenty of hands turn on the final trick because someone spent a high card for no reason.

Once the hand is over, count the tricks, apply your group's scoring, and write the number down before the next deal. Recording it immediately prevents arguments and shows where the team lost ground. Kout Score helps you calculate and track points across your Kout sessions — free on Google Play.
