You do not need to be a card expert. The signs are visible from across the table:

• Bent corners: any card that will not lie flat now has a signature the others do not.
• See-through backs: if you can read the face pattern through the back, this is the most serious sign on the list.
• Sticky or delaminating surface: cards cling to each other, or the top layer starts peeling at the edges.
• Uneven wear: one card feels softer or thicker than the rest — usually the same card that keeps showing up.
• Faded backs: handling, sun, and sweat lighten some backs more than others.

None of these needs a long debate. One card that behaves differently from the rest is enough to tilt a whole session.

How a Worn Deck Leaks Information

This is the real problem. A card you can identify from the back hands you information you are not entitled to. You start reading your hand before you play it, or you feel you know where a card is before it lands. That is not skill — that is the deck talking.

And the other team notices. Someone asks how you knew, and you genuinely did nothing except hold a marked card. Accusations start, and a friendly session turns tense. The correct move is to stop, swap the deck, and say why — not to spend half an hour defending yourself.

A Rotation Rule and What to Do With the Old Deck

Practical rule: if your group plays two or three times a week, keep a spare deck ready and rotate before the symptoms appear, not after an argument over a card. Do it at the start of a calm session, because a new deck needs time to settle in the hand.

Do not throw the old deck away immediately. Keep it for practice, for kids' games, or for teaching a newcomer the order and the calls. What you never do is mix two decks in one session — not even a single card from another pack. The difference in thickness shows on the first touch.

Buy in bulk when there is an offer. Sealed decks keep for years, but they degrade fast in Kuwait's heat and summer humidity. Store them away from sun and AC vents, in a rigid box — not in the car.

For the first few sessions with a fresh deck, expect your reads to be slightly off. New cards slide more, the deal comes out faster, and moves you thought were automatic need a small adjustment. It passes. Your level did not drop; the paper just has not learned your hands yet.
