High cards are your weapons, and playing them too early or too late is the difference between a round you control and one you throw away.
Before you play a big card, ask one question: how much does this trick matter right now? A high card exists to close a round or to force opponents to spend something better. If it does neither, you just paid for nothing.
Practical rule: only play a high card when you can see the result, whether that means winning the trick, breaking an opponent's cut, or opening the path for your partner.
A high card is only guaranteed when you know what is left. Count what has been played in each suit and know which stronger cards are still out. If the ace is gone, your king is now the top card, so play it with confidence. If stronger cards remain, playing yours is a gamble.
Playing a high card early is dangerous when an opponent still holds trump or a stronger card, or when you simply do not know what is out. The time is right when one of three things is true: you control the suit, your partner holds the lead and can feed you, or the opponents have spent their trumps and are left with small cards only.
And never forget the cost of burning a winner for nothing. If you play it on a small trick and the opponent beats it, you have lost the weapon that closes the final round. Holding a high card also gives you leverage: opponents play carefully because they fear the card they have not seen yet.
Ahead on points: play safe, keep your high cards for the tricks that close the game, and avoid unnecessary risk. Tied: watch your partner for a signal and play the card that wins the deciding trick. Behind: take calculated risks, play your high cards earlier, and force the opponents to respond, because waiting while you are down in points helps no one.
