If you are new to Kout, you have probably heard two words everywhere: Son and Hakam. Players keep saying "I declared Son" or "I have Hakam" while you sit confused. Do not worry โ these terms are easier than they sound, and they are the game's heart. Here we explain what Son is, what Hakam is, and when to declare it. Son is a declaration: a player announces they will play alone on one suit. Instead of playing with their partner, they commit to taking the majority of points in one color โ usually their strongest suit. If the Son succeeds, their team earns doubled points. If it is broken โ the other side takes more points โ the declaring team loses doubled points too. Son is a big decision, so think before you call.
Hakam is the heart suit in Kout โ the trump of the game. Any Hakam card beats any card from other suits, even when its value is lower. If they throw a strong spade and you hold a small heart, your Hakam takes the trick. Hakam decides who controls the round, and whoever holds more Hakam cards runs the game. That is why you hear players say: "Whoever holds Hakam holds the game."
Son is worth it only when you are confident in your hand. The classic conditions: you hold high cards in a non-Hakam suit, or strong Hakam cards to back you up, or opponents you can read as weak. Do not declare Son with a half-strong hand โ a broken Son costs doubled points. Read the table and count the risk before you call. If you catch yourself hesitating, the hand is not ready.
Each round has a limited number of Hakam cards, and whoever holds most of them sets the pace. If opponents hold more Hakam, play safe and protect your points one trick at a time. If Hakam is on your side, play aggressively and take control instead of spreading your cards thin. Remember: Hakam beats everything, even the highest cards in normal suits.
The strongest scenario: a player declares Son on Hakam itself, or holds strong Hakam cards that back up their Son. Then opponents must play carefully โ breaking the Son just got much harder. And if an opponent declares Son without Hakam support, you have a golden chance to break it.
