Playing Last in a Trick: How to Use It in Kout

When you are the last player to act in a trick, you hold something the others do not: full information before you commit a card. The opponents have played, your partner has played, and only you are left. That small moment separates an average player from one who reads the table.

What Playing Last Actually Gives You

In Kout the turn moves player by player. The player who leads is guessing, while the last player already knows how the trick looks.

• You know whether the trick is already decided, so you take it with the cheapest card you own instead of wasting a high one.
• You can cut your partner's suit or leave the trick for them, depending on who is currently winning.
• You see which suit each opponent followed, so you decide whether to continue or dump a heavy card.
• You log who is short in which suit, and that information pays off in the next few tricks.

When to Overtake and When to Duck

First rule: if your partner is winning the trick with a strong card, do not overtake them. Eager players throw a big card over their own partner and lose twice, spending a valuable card and taking the lead away from the player who should keep it.

Second rule: if an opponent is winning by a small margin and you can overtake with a medium card, take it. But if someone still to play behind you will simply overtake you, do not pay a high card for a trick you are going to lose anyway.

Third rule: in the late tricks, points matter more than style. Know exactly how much the trick is worth and win it at the lowest possible cost.

Controlling the Tempo From the Last Seat

The last player has quiet authority over the pace. You can win cheaply to keep the lead moving toward your suit, or dump a heavy card on a dead trick so your hand is clean for the endgame.

Three facts do the work for you: how many cards remain in each suit, who has cut twice, and who is still holding a killer card. Every trick adds information, and the last seat collects the most of it.
