Every Kout player knows the feeling: the cards are dealt, your partner glances at you, and the round moves faster than expected. The difference between a solid Kout player and someone who hands tricks to the opponents is rarely luck: it is having a plan for the whole round.
This guide gives a practical round-by-round game plan for Kout as played in Kuwait: four players in two partnerships and a decision on every hand between Son (no trump) and Hakam (a declared trump suit). Follow it in order to win more tricks, protect your partner, and keep control of the score.
A good round begins before the first card is played. Shuffle well, and agree with the table on the target score and the order of play. Small agreements made early prevent disputes in a tight round.
Sort your 13 cards by suit and count what you really hold: high cards, cards per suit, suit length. A hand packed with aces and kings in one suit is asking for Hakam; a balanced hand with no clear suit is usually safer as Son. Never overbid on one strong card: count the tricks you can genuinely win, add one for your partner, then call.
Hakam gives you a trump suit and control of the table but advertises your strength. Son hides your hand but removes your safety net. Favor Hakam with four or more cards in one suit holding the top honors; favor Son when your hand is balanced and your partner prefers quiet play. Commit early and say the choice clearly so your partner can plan around it.
The first tricks set the tone. Lead from your longest strong suit to pull the opponents' high cards, save aces for the late tricks, and never waste a winner on a trick you will not take. When following, play low and let your partner take control.
Watch every card played. Counting means knowing which suits are exhausted and which high cards are still out. When your partner signals strength in a suit, feed it. When the opponents attack your partner's weakness, cover it cheaply. Partners who talk through the cards win rounds.
Adjusting mid-round separates good rounds from great ones. If the opponents are hoarding trumps, force them out. If your partner is winning cheaply, keep feeding their suit. Review the round every few tricks, not only when it ends.
