In sun (no-trump) games every suit plays by its own strength, so timing matters most. Clear out weak cards early while you still can, and always keep something to follow with if the opponent surprises you in a suit you are short on.

In hokum, the trump suit changes the picture. Even your smallest trump can beat any non-trump card, so never throw trumps away casually. Keep low trumps to break an opponent's trick or to cover for your partner.

And remember: your partner reads your discards. A low card in a suit usually says that you still have more of them, so they can safely keep leading that suit. Do not throw small cards blindly — every discard is a message, so make it a useful one.
