Designing a Kout Team Logo Without a Designer

Kout Score Blog

Most Kout teams start as one session in a diwaniya and only later realise they need a name and a badge. The good news is you do not need a designer or expensive software. A clean team identity is an hour of work once you know what to decide first.

This walks through the order that keeps it simple: name, then colours, then shape, then the free tools that finish the job.

Start with the name, not the logo

The name carries half the identity and the logo only translates it into a shape. Pick something short that people can shout across a table without repeating themselves.

Write your shortlist by hand on plain paper and look at it from a metre away. If it needs explaining, it is too long.

Two colours, one shape

The team badges that hold up best use two main colours and a plain background. Pick one dark tone for detail and one light tone behind it, and skip gradients because they disappear when printed small.

For the shape, choose a single symbol: one letter from the name, a simple geometric form, or one motif from the game. One symbol is enough — adding a second turns a badge into a poster.

Free tools that are good enough

You do not need to buy software for this. These cover the whole job from a phone or a laptop:

Rules that keep it readable

A team logo gets seen small, on a group photo or a phone screen, so test it at that size before you commit to it.

Review the badge with a critical eye once it is built. The most common mistake is cramming everything in: team name, founding year, diwaniya name, and two symbols. The result looks busy and is unreadable on a phone. Cut anything you cannot read from a metre away and keep only the name and the symbol.

The second mistake is changing the badge every month. Recognition comes from repetition, so settle on one design and keep it for at least a full season.

Where the identity actually goes

A logo has a practical job: it identifies your team in sessions and friendly tournaments. Put it on the team photo, in the group chat, and on the table when you join an event.

If you also record session results, the Kout Score app helps you record and track scores for your Kout sessions — free on Google Play. A clean badge and a clean score sheet support each other.

Start today with paper and a pen, lock the name and the two colours, then move to the tool. When two options look equally good, take the simpler one. Download Kout Score from https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.q8dm.kout
