Most groups never formally name a Kout team captain. One person ends up confirming who is coming, holding the time, and keeping the score. The job is small, but it does not do itself.
Four friends at the same diwaniya every Thursday at the same hour need no captain. The routine carries itself.
The moment the group grows, adds substitutes, or moves between locations, gaps appear. Somebody arrives late and nobody knows his seat. Two players argue over a call for twenty minutes.
Everything here is administrative, and unrelated to how well he plays.
None of it lets him decide for others, or change a rule because he prefers it.
Recording is where groups slip: paper gets folded into a pocket, and memory turns generous by midnight. Kout Score helps you calculate and track points across your Kout sessions — free on Google Play.
The difference is in the wording. A captain says “let's go back to what we agreed on”. A bossy player says “I've decided”.
A captain accepts being overruled, and stops a discussion when the table gets tense. The bossy player wants the last word, and slowly makes it about himself. By the end of the night, people are either playing or packing up.
Skip the strongest player and the oldest. Look for four practical traits.
If two people fit, settle it with a draw, not a vote.
A permanent captain quietly becomes a burden, because every problem lands on him even in a tired week. Rotating monthly, or every few sessions, works better.
Rotation shows the group how much the job involves, and breaks the idea that one person owns the session. Hand over a short note: the usual time, substitutes, any recent agreement.
In a league the role matters more, but the tasks are the same.
Stop the play rather than arguing through the next deal, then let both sides finish.
Go back to whatever your group wrote down, or to the last time the same question was settled. With no precedent, park it for next session.
Above all, do not try to keep both sides happy at once. Sometimes the fair answer is to redeal the round, which costs less than a midnight argument.
If you are the captain this week, leave the arithmetic to the app and watch the table. Kout Score is on Google Play, so install it before your next session.
