Kout Table Lighting and Seating: A Practical Setup Guide

Kout Score Blog

Before the first card is dealt, the table has already made a few decisions: where the light lands, who sits across from whom, and where the phones go. Most arguments about a counting mistake start elsewhere โ€” a shadow across the cards, or a chair at an angle that shows someone a hand they should not see.

Put the Light Over the Table, Not Beside It

A lamp hanging over the middle of the table beats any floor lamp at the edge. Side lighting throws the shadow of your own hand across your cards, so you tilt your head to see what was played. Hung too high, the light flattens the detail on the cards; too low, it sits in somebody's eyes all night. Light should fall on the table, out of everyone's line of sight.

Reflection is worse than shadow. With a window, TV, or wall light behind one player, the cards turn into glare and nobody can read the suits. Nobody sits with their back to a light source โ€” if the seating is fixed, move your chair half a metre.

White Light or Yellow Light?

White light shows colours and symbols clearly, which matters when you count cards and track suits. Warm yellow is easier on the eyes over a long session, but too dim and red starts to look like black from across the table.

The middle ground works: warm-white light, bright enough without hitting anyone in the face. Keep one source over the table, because multiple lamps give every card two or three shadows.

Seating Order: Partners Facing Each Other

Partners sit opposite each other, opponents on your two sides. A correct setup lets every player see their partner and the whole table, while nobody gets a view of a hand they should not have. These mistakes repeat every session:

Keep the distance so everyone reaches the middle of the table comfortably, with chairs at roughly the same height. A high table with a low chair puts the cards far from your eyes; the reverse gives you a clear view of the hand beside you.

Phones, Glasses, and the Cost of a Bad Setup

Phones are fine if they stay in one spot, face down, away from the cards. The player who checks his phone every round pulls half the table with him. Glasses and cups belong off the card area too.

This is where a bad setup becomes slow play. Shadows and wrong seating make you count badly, bad counting makes every round get reviewed, and reviews open the door to arguments. Proper light and clean seating keep the game moving, and scores get written while they are fresh.
