Kout Table Hygiene: Keep Your Deck Clean and Playable

Kout Score Blog

You pick up a card, feel slight tackiness, and it sticks to the one behind it โ€” a glass of tea and a hand that never got dried. Kout table hygiene starts from the first deal.

Clean cards slide, deal fast, and give nothing away.

Why sticky cards ruin a session

A card that sticks does more than look bad: dealing gets heavy, two cards get counted as one, and someone argues about who dealt wrong.

Worse, a bent corner or a small stain becomes a mark that tells a player which card is coming. Nobody meant to cheat; the effect is the same.

Start with clean, dry hands

Wash and dry your hands before you sit down. Wet hands pass moisture to the deck, and every deal after that feels heavier.

Drinks and snacks at the table

The main cause is not hands โ€” it is the glass. A tea glass on the table edge drips once onto the deck, the drop dries, and you have a tacky patch. Use a lidded cup, or one on a side table away from the cards.

Food behaves the same way: nuts, chips and chocolate leave residue that reaches the deck within two rounds. Keep food on a separate plate and wipe your hands before play.

Wiping and airing: the core of Kout table hygiene

A gentle wipe with a clean, dry cloth on both sides handles dust and light residue. Skip water and hard rubbing, which spread the stain.

Then fan the deck on a clean, dry surface and let it air before storing, so moisture and smell do not build up in the box.

Storage, and when to replace the deck

A good deck in an open box beside a tea glass is tired within a month. Keep it in its original or a sealed box, somewhere dry and away from the kitchen, with nothing heavy on top.

One deck per box, or cards go missing and marks appear.

Scoring fits the same routine. Kout Score helps you calculate and track points across your Kout sessions โ€” free on Google Play, so the count is quick and you stay at the table.

On replacing a deck: no fixed number exists, and house rules vary. The signs are clear:

Two of these and a fresh deck is the better call.

Reminders that do not offend anyone

The hard part is not the cleaning, it is the conversation. Nobody enjoys hearing their hands are dirty, so make it shared:

The goal is the session, not the deck. Clean cards and a relaxed mood make hakam and san calls better.
