Kuwaiti summers mean boats and beach days: Doha, the Shuwaikh shoreline, a trip to Failaka, and late-afternoon drives along the coast. On every outing, after the swim and the food, someone reaches for the cards and the first round of Kout begins. Playing near the water is not like playing in a diwaniya, though โ wind, sand and glare change everything.
Wind is the first enemy. Kout cards are light, and one gust can scatter a whole hand across the sand. Sand is worse: grit works its way between the cards and wears them down over time. Sea humidity makes them stick together and turns handling into a chore. So don't clamp the cards down and play tense, and don't fight the breeze โ slow the pace and pick a sheltered spot.
You don't need a real table on a trip. A cooler box or a flat water bottle does the job, or you can spread a small mat on the sand. What matters is a level, non-slip surface. A simple weight, like a stone or a metal tin, fixes anything too light to stay put. If you play straight on the sand, choose a dry, firm patch near the shade of the awning, away from the path where people keep walking through.
Outdoors your deck needs more care. Carry a sealed plastic box and never leave cards face-up between rounds. Lay a clean cloth under play, and keep drinks well away from the cards. If sand creeps into the box, wipe it gently with a dry cloth โ never wash cards with water, they swell and warp. These small habits make a real difference:
On a trip, some people came to swim and others to eat, so not everyone will play. Agree on the timing and the number of rounds before the first deal, and keep the score clear from the start. Don't open a new round while people are busy eating or counting, and don't rub it in when someone loses โ the sun and wind are punishment enough. If a friend just wants to watch, let them relax instead of pushing them to play. Even outdoors, the free Kout Score app keeps the tally fast and ends arguments over the count.
