Nobody at a Kout table uses a full name. "Abu Saad", "Al-Haddad", "The Scissors" โ you hear these more often than the names on the ID, and some of them stick for twenty years no matter how hard the owner tries to shake them.
Nicknames are not assigned in a meeting. They come out of a moment: someone dumped the wrong card in a decisive trick, someone never once took a risk, someone laughed at everything for three hours.
Work produces its share too โ "the Engineer", "the Teacher", "the Taxi". So do appearance, voice, and the way a man sits and holds his cards.
Some are inherited. A son takes his father's seat and, with it, his father's name at the table, even if he is twenty-five and quiet.
A name used inside the diwaniya is not always a name for outside it. Some nicknames are heavy and embarrass the man or his family, and those stay behind the door.
The simple rule: if the owner laughs, it is banter. If he goes quiet or his face changes, stop. A joke that costs one person is not a joke because eleven people laughed.
And if someone is new to the table, do not use a nickname before you know he accepts it. Use his name for the first session. A nickname that belongs will arrive on its own.
Do not give it a big reaction. A nickname lives on attention, and every time you get angry you feed it.
Better: laugh once, then say plainly, "call me so-and-so", and repeat it without a speech. Most tables respect a clear request that is not delivered as a challenge.
If the name is an insult, or drags someone's family into it, that is a different matter. That conversation belongs with the host, away from the table, not in front of the room.
Nicknames record a diwaniya's history better than any notebook. Twenty years later people remember the moment and the name; they rarely remember who won that night.
That is why they do not fade. They get shorter, they pick up a prefix, they change shape โ but they stay.
Scores deserve the same care. Write the names on the session sheet, then log the points. The Kout Score app helps you track and calculate your Kout session points โ free on Google Play.
