You look at a Kout score sheet from last week and read a six that was really a zero. Or two digits squeezed together that you count as one number. Most arguments after a Kout session do not start with cheating โ they start with handwriting nobody can read.
Once the cards are away, the paper is the only record left. Two hours later nobody remembers the rounds, only the number on the page. A clear figure ends the discussion in a second, and a smudged one starts it. The sheet gets written in a hurry, between rounds, with talk around the table โ which is why the habit has to be deliberate.
In fast writing the mistake is usually in reading, not in adding. A four and a five run together when the pen is not lifted. A two and a three become one stroke when the tail is rushed. A small zero disappears, and a six and a seven depend on the angle of the pen.
The fix needs no calligraphy: write digits larger, lift the pen between them, and close the loop on a zero or a six. Small habits on paper, large ones at review time.
The commonest source of confusion is mixing Arabic-Indic digits with Western digits in the same table. One column gets written one way, the next the other, and then someone compares them and adds wrong.
Choose one system on the first line and keep it to the bottom of the page. If another player writes on the sheet, he follows it too.
One writer matters more than it sounds. If every player writes his own points, the handwriting changes every round and review becomes guesswork. A single writer knows where things go โ and when he steps away, the table waits or uses a stand-in named at the start.
And when the sheet itself goes missing or gets soaked, the night's record goes with it. Kout Score helps you calculate and track points across your Kout sessions โ free on Google Play โ so the total survives the paper.
Read each round's figure out loud and have the opposing team confirm it by ear. If there is doubt, go back to that round rather than the total, because an error in the total carries forward.
At the end of the night, read the final total and compare it with the running column. If they differ, re-add the rounds one by one โ clear writing makes that two minutes, a messy sheet makes it a debate.
