Every Kout player in Kuwait knows the moment: the cards start sticking together, one corner is bent, and everyone at the table can tell which card is coming. A deck does not fail overnight โ it wears slowly, and most players replace it a month too late.
Card stock is paper, and paper follows the air around it. In a Kuwait summer, heat and humidity make a deck swell and stick during the shuffle. Dry winter air at a camp does the opposite: it pulls moisture out, and the edges turn brittle and split. That is about storage, not deck quality.
The best storage is boring: a firm box, closed, in a drawer at room temperature. The original tuck box works while it still holds its shape, but a small plastic or wooden box with a lid protects the corners far better when the deck travels. Keep the deck tight in its box โ a loose deck rubs against itself and the edges round off.
In a very humid room, a small silica packet in the box helps โ but never seal a damp deck somewhere hot to dry it out.
Most damage happens in the hand, not the box:
Some wear is cosmetic, some changes the game. Replace the deck when you see:
A weekly-use deck usually lasts a season or two. Once it is marked or clumping, retire it, even if it still deals fine.
New decks are stiff and slippery and slide out of the hand. Deal them, spread them, shuffle gently and let them sit a night in the box. Skip the bending tricks โ they cost the deck weeks of life for ten minutes of convenience.
Keep a second deck sealed in the bag. It saves the night when a card goes missing or the main deck starts sticking mid-session. Store it in the same dry box and mark which deck is which. Kout Score helps you track and calculate your Kout session scores โ free on Google Play.
