Wrist and Hand Strain from Dealing Kout: Prevention and Exercises

Kout Score Blog

Dealing looks like the easy job at the Kout table, but your hand works harder than anyone's: gripping, spreading, dealing round after round. The ache rarely shows in the first round. It arrives quietly in round ten. Most of it comes from how you deal, not from dealing itself.

Why long dealing sessions strain your hand

A hard grip keeps the tendons in your wrist tight all evening. Squeeze the deck as if it might escape, and your forearm never relaxes between rounds.

Then repetition: the same thumb push and wrist rotation, hundreds of times a night. That is what makes it sore.

Setup matters too: a low table leaves the wrist bent awkwardly, and the tension climbs to the shoulder.

Deal from the corner, and sit right

Set the table so your elbow sits near ninety degrees and your wrist stays straight, not cocked up or folded down. If the table is low, raise the seat or add a cushion, and do not rest your full weight on the wrist.

Take a break every 30 to 40 minutes

A long session needs a short pause roughly every half hour; two minutes is enough. The natural moment is between rounds, when the score is written. That is also when the phone comes out, and Kout Score helps you record and follow your Kout session scores — free on Google Play, so the break fits the routine instead of interrupting it.

During the break: stand, open your hand, spread the fingers, sit back down. No need to leave the room, just break the same fixed position.

If your group plays long, make it a habit every third or fourth round and agree on it at the start.

Five simple stretches

Each takes seconds. Stay in a comfortable range and stop if you feel sharp pain or tingling.

When to stop and see a doctor

Mild soreness that eases after a break and a change of grip is normal. But pain still there a day or two later, numbness in the fingers, grip weakness, or swelling is no longer a technique question. See a doctor.

The same applies if pain wakes you at night or sharpens with movement: let someone else deal and get it checked.

Note: this is general advice, not medical treatment or a substitute for a doctor's opinion.

Dealing should not cost you a wrist

A looser grip, a short break every half hour, and a few seconds of stretching go a long way. If you would rather track the session without pen and paper, Kout Score helps you record and follow your Kout session scores — free on Google Play.
