You do not need a full room. One quiet corner away from the kitchen and the front door is enough.

Lighting Without Glare on the Cards

Lighting is the single biggest factor. Card faces reflect light, and a bright beam pointed straight at the table creates glare that hides the pips and tires the eyes within an hour.

• Keep main lighting overhead and soft rather than aimed straight down at the table.
• Add a small side lamp so light lands on the table without bouncing off the cards.
• Move the table away from a window that takes direct sun during play, or use a light blind.
• A neutral white bulb is easier on the eyes than a harsh yellow one over a long session.

Ventilation and AC Without a Draft

A closed room gets stuffy after a few hours, and stuffy air kills concentration. You want steady airflow, but never a fan blowing across the table — light cards lift fast and a hand can be ruined.

If you use AC, set a moderate temperature and angle the vent away from the table. Air should move through the room, not land on the players.

Chairs and Table at the Right Height

Chairs make or break a long session. A seat that is too low or too high strains the back and stops you seeing the cards clearly.

• Choose chairs with a backrest, even a simple one.
• Feet should rest flat and the knee should sit close to a right angle.
• A medium round or square table works better than a large one — everyone can reach the cards.
• Leave enough space between players so shoulders are not touching.

Test the height the first time: sit down and see whether your arm is relaxed as you play a card. If your shoulder lifts, the table is too high for you.

Storing Cards and Cutting the Noise

Give everything a home. A small box or one drawer does the job.

• Keep cards in a sealed box so they do not soften in humidity.
• Keep a pen and a notepad in a fixed spot for scoring.
• Any drink should have a lid and stay well away from the cards.
