If you have ever sat near a kout table in a Kuwaiti diwaniya, the game can look fast, loud, and full of silent signals between partners. Underneath the banter, the structure is simple enough to pick up in one evening. This walkthrough covers the setup, the trump, الصّن, كوت, and how a session is scored, so your first hand feels familiar.
Kout is Kuwait's beloved social card game, played in diwaniyas, cafés, and homes — and now online too. Four players split into two fixed teams of two, and partners sit opposite each other. Many sessions use a 32-card setup: take a standard deck, remove the 2 through 6 of every suit, and deal 8 cards to each player. Other groups play with the full standard deck, and some house variants run with two or three players.
Because groups differ on the deck and the number of players, the first rule of kout is not about cards at all: agree before you play. Some gatherings do it one way and others differ — who deals, how many points end the round, and how long the session runs are all settled in advance.
In kout the trump suit is always hearts, called الحكم. Any heart beats any card of any other suit, so hearts are the most valuable cards in your hand. A heart played over a spade lead wins the trick even against the highest spade.
A trick is played in turns: each player puts one card down, and the strongest card of the led suit wins — unless someone plays a heart. In most groups you follow the led suit when you can; if your group plays differently, agree first. The winner leads the next trick, and the hand continues until the cards are done.
Two special ideas give kout its character. الصّن (Son) is a declaration: a player announces they will play alone on one suit — usually their strongest — for doubled points. Success brings doubled points; failure (ينكسر) costs the declaring side double instead. A كوت is when one side sweeps the hand and takes all the tricks, which is worth big points. The name of the game is tied to this idea, and you will hear it shouted with real feeling.
Points are counted per trick and per hand toward an agreed target that ends the round. Targets and counting styles vary from group to group, so settle the number before the first deal. Three words carry the whole session:

Beyond the main score, two players may arrange a السرا — an optional private side agreement kept separate from the main scoring. It adds spice to the session, as long as everyone involved understands the deal.
