A long layover or a six-hour flight is dead time, unless there is a deck in your carry-on. Kout at the airport and on flights works, but it is not a diwaniya session: the table is tiny, the neighbours are strangers, and the space has its own rules.
You do not need the full diwaniya kit, just one small pouch that fits the front pocket of your carry-on and comes out without a mess:
One deck is enough; extras get lost. If you score on a phone, Kout Score helps you calculate and track points across your Kout sessions โ free on Google Play.
A tray table does not hold four open hands. Keep your cards close to your chest and put played cards down as one stack in the middle.
Before takeoff and landing the crew asks you to stow the table and fasten your belt. Gather the cards and continue once the sign is off โ not losing the game, just reading the room.
Tray tables are smooth, slightly tilted, and the aircraft moves, so cards slide and hands get exposed. A cotton cloth under the deck grips, deadens sound, and protects the surface; a folded napkin is a temporary substitute. Keep drinks off the table โ liquid near the deck has no real recovery. Hold your cards low and play with short movements, not wide ones.
Volume is part of kout in a diwaniya. On a flight, the passenger beside you may be asleep and does not care who took the round.
A simple test: if you can hear the cards land, your volume is about right.
Kout is a four-player game in two teams; that is the base of it. With three people there is no official way to make it work; whatever happens next is a personal arrangement.
The friendly options are limited: play a simple card game with the same deck until a fourth arrives, or save the session. Some groups try a three-player version, but that is informal, decided by your group's house rules, not invented on a plane.
There is no room for an open score sheet on a tray table, and it moves. A phone fixes that: enter points after each round and the total stays in one place. Start the session before takeoff, not mid-flight.
Enter points as you go rather than at the end โ Kout Score keeps the running total and the session, free on Google Play. When you land, everything is there and you can check who took the most rounds without asking each player.
