Host Checklist Before a Kout Night: What to Prep and When

Kout Score Blog

Most Kout nights don't fall apart over the cards. They fall apart over small things nobody sorted before the first guest arrived: a missing card, a table with a lean, or nobody sure who is keeping score. This checklist runs in time order, so you can clear it before the doorbell rings.

The day before: cards and gear

Start with the deck. A Kout session needs all 32 cards, and one missing card stops the round. Count them a day ahead, and keep any spare deck in a drawer rather than on the table โ€” groups that play with two decks nearby end up mixing them.

Then check the rest of the gear: a score sheet or a scoring app, and a pen that actually writes. Test the pen before the session; they dry out quietly. If you're playing in the diwaniya instead of the living room, set up a folding table a day early.

An hour before: table, chairs and light

The table has to be level. Slide a glass across it and watch: a table with a lean makes cards slide and gives someone a reason to complain all night. Clear whatever is sitting on it before the session, not mid-deal.

Four comfortable chairs, each with a clear view of the table without leaning in. A chair that sits too low forces players to reach for their cards and slows every round.

Light matters more than people expect. A lamp directly above the table beats a lamp across the room that throws a shadow over the cards. If you're playing outside at night, add a second light beside the table.

Switch the AC on half an hour before guests arrive, not when they walk in. A hot room makes for a short session and shorter tempers.

Ten minutes before: scoring and ground rules

Before the first deal, agree out loud on three things: how many rounds you're playing, who keeps score, and what score ends the session โ€” according to your group's house rules. Settling this first prevents the argument that starts after round five, when someone is behind and wants a recount.

This is where the app earns its place: Kout Score helps you calculate and track points across your Kout sessions โ€” free on Google Play. Instead of scribbling totals on a scrap of paper and losing part of the night to recalculating, the score stays visible and agreed.

The quick checklist

That last item deserves its own line: the break. Set it before you start โ€” after a set number of rounds, according to your group's house rules โ€” because an unplanned break kills the rhythm of a session. Keep drinks slightly away from the table so nothing spills on the cards, and serve dinner before play rather than in the middle of it.
