Getting Rid of Heavy Cards in Kout

In Kout, not every strong card helps you. Some heavy cards just sit in your hand and cause trouble: you can't throw them with confidence, and when you play them at the wrong moment you hand an opponent a free trick. Kout in Kuwait is usually four players, two teams, partners sitting opposite, play moving clockwise. The real question isn't how to play your strong cards, it's how to get rid of them at the right time.

What counts as a heavy card?

A heavy card is a high card, or a strong card in a suit you can actually control. It becomes a burden when it stays in your hand until the end: it earns nothing if you never use it well, and you can't dump it without worrying an opponent takes the trick. Simply put:

• A high card in a long suit can take a trick, but save it too long and the chance is gone.
• A mid card in a suit where you hold very few is often dead weight, because you can't lead with it.
• A high card in a short suit is the most awkward, since you can't choose when it comes out.

When to dump a heavy card early

Practical rule: if a heavy card isn't going to earn its keep, get rid of it in the first two or three tricks. The best moment is when your partner leads that suit, or when a card comes out that tells you what's left on the table.

Leading a heavy card on the first trick is a gamble. If an opponent was sitting on that suit, you spent your best card for nothing. Better to open with a small card in a suit where you hold several, and keep the heavy one for a trick that actually scores.

Second point: let your partner take the trick instead. If your partner leads a strong suit and you also hold a heavy card there, you don't have to fight them for it. Competing with your own partner for the same trick is one of the most common ways a team quietly loses points.

Escaping through your weak suit

Hold only two or three cards in one suit? That's not a weakness, it's an exit door. Use it to shed a heavy card that's dragging you down. When that suit finally gets played, unload onto it and free your hand.

Watch what has already been played. By the later tricks it's clear which cards are gone and which remain. If a suit has run out of high cards, your middle cards suddenly look strong. Your hand shape changes with every card played, and a heavy card doesn't stay heavy forever.

• Saving a strong card for the end when it doesn't fit the end.
• Fighting your partner for the same trick instead of splitting the work.
• Leading with a heavy card on the first trick for no reason.
• Ignoring the cards already played and playing the hand you started with.
