• «كوّت عليهم» (kawwat alayhum) — "he swept them": one side took every trick of the hand. A full kout is the big score of the session, and the source of the game's name.
• «انكسر الصن» (inkasar as-sin) — "the son broke": the player who declared a solo son failed to win it, so the doubled points go to the other team.
• «عنده الحكم» / «معاه الحكم» — "he holds the hukum": said when a player is sitting on strong hearts, the suit that beats everything.
• «شدة أولى» — "the first hand": opening-table talk, half strategy and half bragging, claiming that whoever takes the first hand sets the mood of the round.
• «السرا» (al-sara) — the side bet: a private agreement between players, kept apart from the official score and settled among themselves.

Friendly fire between partners

Not every phrase is about the cards. Half the fun of kout is the running commentary between partners — the gentle blame, the fake outrage, the satisfied cough that follows a well-timed kout. This is where the table talk gets warm:

• «أنت خربت علينا» — "you ruined it for us": the eternal partner joke after a hand slips away, delivered with a smile and usually followed by a request for more tea.
• «زيدنا شدة» — "deal us another one": a light challenge after a loss, the politest way to say the rematch starts now.
