Two cards left in your hand. The table goes quiet. Everyone is waiting to see what you throw. This is where most Kout sessions get decided โ not in the first ten cards, but in one small decision at the end.
At the start everything is hidden: the full deck is spread across four players, 13 cards each. By the time you reach your last two, most of the deck has been played and seen. You are no longer asking what your opponent holds. You are asking what the worst outcome is if you throw this card.
A player who counts has a reason for every card. A player who hopes throws and regrets it two tricks later.
The common mistake is holding a point card out of fear and finishing the round with it still in your hand. The rule is simple: if your partner is winning, throw your highest card. Points count for the team whether you take the trick or he does.
Reverse it when an opponent is winning and you cannot beat them: throw your lowest card and keep the trump or the points for a better chance.
That covers the trump question too. If you hold a low trump and one ordinary card and the trick is running away, do not throw the trump. A trump takes a whole trick later; spending it here costs you two cards instead of one. The only time to spend it is the final trick, when your card really does beat the table and the points are worth taking.
If you play last, every card is on the table before you choose โ use that and do not rush. If you lead, the decision is harder: open with a safe card rather than one that pulls points, especially when you do not know where the trump sits.
If your partner led, watch his card. His opening shows where his strength is, and you can support it instead of opening a new suit against yourself.
When the session ends, go back to those two cards. What was the alternative? What would have happened if you had thrown the other one? That question builds experience faster than ten sessions played without review. The Kout Score app helps you calculate and track your Kout session scores โ free on Google Play โ so the scorebook is not competing for your attention while you think it through.
Remember: the last two cards are not luck, they are decisions. Count what is left, read who is winning, and hold the trump for the moment it pays.
