Every kout session starts the same way: the deck is shuffled, cards move around the table, and the evening balances on one clean deal. Dealing looks easy, yet most arguments begin right here — over who deals, how many cards per hand, or a card flipped face-up. A few clear habits keep the deal running smoothly.

Who Deals First?

Kout has no referee and no rulebook that says who deals first — the players decide before the cards leave the box. The most common ways are a simple agreement or a quick draw: in many sessions the host or whoever brought the deck opens the game, while others pick cards and the agreed winner deals.

The deal never stays with one player all evening. After every شكة (one hand), the role moves one seat around the table, so over a session the dealing is shared fairly. Agree on that rotation when you pick the first dealer, and nobody feels skipped.

How Many Cards Does Each Player Get?

The most common Kuwaiti setup is four players in two fixed teams of two, partners sitting opposite each other. Many sessions use a 32-card deck — remove the 2s through the 6s from a standard deck, leaving four suits of eight ranks — and deal eight cards to each player, so the deal comes out even.

Some groups play differently: two or three players, the full fifty-two-card deck, or another number of cards per hand. None of these is wrong — kout is played by agreement. What matters is settling deck size and cards per player before the first hand, since every point is built on that deal.

Dealing Mistakes and Re-Deal Customs

However careful everyone is, mistakes happen: a card turns face-up, a hand comes up short, or the deck is incomplete. The custom is to fix it with a re-deal and a laugh.

• A card exposed during the deal: most groups re-deal the hand; some tuck it back and continue — agree on your way.
• A wrong count in a hand: stop before anyone looks and re-deal, usually with the same dealer.
• An incomplete or badly shuffled deck: re-shuffle and re-deal before the first trick.
• A mistake noticed after tricks were played: say it immediately — fixing a deal mid-hand is harder.

Re-dealing carries no shame. The dealer is doing the table a favour, and a second deal is just another chance — tea stays hot, banter continues, nobody holds a grudge.

Keep the Deal Dispute-Free

Most dealing arguments are really agreement arguments: one player assumed eight cards while another assumed a full deck. Settle the details before the first hand:

• Agree on the setup: 32 or 52 cards, players, cards per hand, and the target that ends the round (الجولة).
• Let someone other than the dealer cut the deck — it keeps the deal clean and doubts away.
• Count your own cards before looking, and speak up if something feels off.
• Keep side bets like السرا (sara) separate from the main rules.
