In Kout, not every card in your hand will win a trick. As the round moves along, some cards lose their value and become dead โ they cannot take a trick, they score nothing, and they can even block your partner. Here is what dead cards really are and how to handle them.
A dead card is one that is unlikely to win a trick, either because what beats it has already been played, or because the cards around it no longer help anyone. Kout makes this obvious: every trick removes cards from the round, so a card that looked fine at the start can be worthless by the middle or the end.
Say you hold a small card in a suit the opponents have already taken tricks in. The chance it wins a trick is slim. The same is true when you are weak in a suit and cannot take anything there โ those cards stop being an asset and start being weight.
Cards rarely die all at once. It happens step by step:
If you have not taken a single trick in a suit all round, that is a clear sign. The same goes if every card you lead in that suit comes back at you easily โ those cards are done.
First, stop trying to force a dead card to win. Do not lead it into a big trick or build your round plan around it. The goal is to get rid of it at the lowest cost.
Second, dump it on a trick that is already lost. If the trick is clearly going to the opponents, do not burn a useful card with it โ throw the dead card and close the trick cheaply.
Third, think about your partner. A card that does nothing for you can open the way for them if you time it right, and shedding a card is sometimes the same as handing your partner a trick.
This is where tracking comes in. Most players lose points to dead cards because they stop counting tricks. Kout Score helps you calculate and track your Kout session scores โ free on Google Play โ so you can see where you actually lose points instead of relying on feel.
The biggest one is treating every card as a winning tool. Part of the skill in Kout is knowing which cards are worth protecting and which should go early.
Second, holding a dead card until the end and hoping it improves. It will not โ the longer you wait, the fewer chances you have to shed it for free.
Third, fighting for tricks in a suit where you are weak while ignoring the suit where you are strong.
A dead card is not the loss. The loss is playing as if it were strength. Know when to throw it, do not burn good cards with it, and think about your partner before you decide.
