Post-Session Cleanup: A Five-Minute Routine That Saves Your Gear

Kout Score Blog

The last hand is over, the glasses are empty, and everyone is heading for the door. What stays behind is the mess: a sticky table, a plate of chips, and a deck of Kout cards piled in a corner. A week later you are hunting for a full deck and cannot find one. The routine below takes five minutes and adds years to your gear.

Why cards stick and stain

Card stock has two enemies: moisture and oil. Tea and gahwa reach the cards through the base of a glass, or through a player's hand that never got dried. Chips and nuts leave a thin film of oil that grabs dust and does not come off. Once that happens, cards cling to each other, the edges soften, and marks on the back start giving players the wrong idea about what they are holding. You cannot wash cards. The fix is dry, regular cleaning.

The five minutes, step by step

Make it a fixed habit before the last person leaves the table:

Keep the deck flat and boxed

An open box left on the table all night, or a deck shoved loose into a drawer, is the main cause of warped edges. Put the cards back in their own box after every session, and if the box is half empty, lay something flat and light on top so the deck does not shift around. Never store cards under heavy objects or loose in a bag with keys โ€” scratches on the back make players distrust the deck itself.

Kuwait heat and sunlight

Summer here is hard on card stock. A car parked in the sun gets hot enough to soften and warp a deck, and humidity finishes the job. Store your gear somewhere dry, out of direct sun, at normal room temperature. If you keep cards in the car, at least use a closed box away from the windows, and bring them inside when you can.

Archive the scores before you forget

The easiest step is also the one people skip: record the result. Once everyone is gone, the argument starts โ€” who won, by how much, who was on which team โ€” and every player remembers a different night. Kout Score helps you count and track session scores, and it is free on Google Play. Log the session before you sleep and skip next week's argument entirely.

Five minutes after every session gets you cleaner cards, a complete deck, and a score history you can actually trust. Do it once and it becomes part of the ritual without you noticing.
